BRIGHTON, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program held its first “Signing Day” on Tuesday.
It was similar to signing days students sign with college sports teams.
Students in the program signed an agreement with their matched employer to begin a paid co-op.
“Signing Day” featured streaming videos, contract announcements, official signings, photo ops and swag.
"I like to get up and do stuff and work with my hands so I knew that EMCC would be perfect for me because I would get to work with machines," Webster Thomas student Patrick Childs said.
The employers said they find it helpful as well.
"This is going to help us out with bringing youth back into manufacturing,” Kyle Jones of Micro Instrument Corp. said. “We're going to have a huge shortage and we have a huge shortage right now so we're very glad that this has come together."
The event at MCC’s Brighton campus was developed by MCC and the Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association (RTMA).
